On 5 April, 2006, Allan Kaprow, the master of the Happening, died peacefully at his home in Encinitas (California, USA) at the age of 78. In the late fifties and early sixties, his spectacular and theatrical environments and performance pieces exceeded the capacities of galleries and museums to display them. His increasingly austere psychological and spiritual pieces from the seventies onwards managed to elude all but the most eager audiences who increasingly became participants and collaborators in the work. Allan Kaprow was a radical artist whose work transformed the nature of art making forever.
